Stocks pulled back Monday. The S&P 500 closed at 7,109 (−0.24%), the Nasdaq fell to 24,404 (−0.26%) — snapping a historic 13-session win streak — and the Dow slipped 5 points to 49,443. The retreat was driven by renewed Middle East tensions after the U.S. seized an Iranian cargo vessel, raising questions about the ceasefire expiring tonight at 8:00 PM ET.

Overnight, Asia leaned positive: South Korea’s Kospi surged 2.7% to a record 6,388 on tech strength; Japan’s Nikkei gained 0.9%. In Europe, the Stoxx 600 edged up 0.1% as traders weighed ceasefire uncertainty against potential peace talks — VP Vance is reportedly heading to Islamabad for discussions with Iranian officials.

WHAT’S MOVING PRE-MARKET

  • AAPL — down ~0.1% pre-market. Apple announced Tim Cook will move to Executive Chairman effective September 1, with hardware chief John Ternus becoming CEO. Shares fell ~1% after-hours Monday but are stabilizing. Cook’s 15-year tenure built Apple into a $4 trillion company.

  • UNH — rising pre-market. UnitedHealth reported Q1 revenue of $111.7 billion, topping the $109.66 billion consensus. The insurer raised 2026 adjusted EPS (earnings per share) guidance to over $18.25, up from $17.75.

  • GE — in focus ahead of Q1 earnings. GE Aerospace carries a ~$190 billion backlog, with analysts expecting ~9% earnings growth and ~18% revenue growth on strong aviation and defense demand.

  • RTX — reporting Q1 before the bell. Consensus expects EPS of $1.51 and revenue of $21.45 billion. Defense names remain in focus amid the Iran conflict.

  • NOC — also reporting Q1 this morning. Consensus calls for EPS of $6.06 (+83% YoY) on revenue of $9.75 billion — a barometer for Industrials sector defense exposure.

TODAY’S KEY EVENTS

  • 10:00 AM ET — Existing Home Sales (March). This NAR report measures the annualized rate of previously owned home sales — a key gauge of housing health. Traders will watch whether elevated mortgage rates are cooling demand further. A miss reinforces rate-cut expectations; a beat suggests stabilization.

  • 8:00 PM ET — U.S.–Iran Ceasefire Expiration. The two-week ceasefire expires tonight. President Trump called an extension “highly unlikely.” VP Vance’s reported travel to Islamabad adds a wildcard. This is the week’s most consequential event for energy prices and the VIX — a collapse likely sends crude back toward $100+ and pressures risk assets, while an extension could trigger a relief rally.

  • Earnings Before the Open: Danaher (DHR), GE Aerospace (GE), RTX (RTX), Northrop Grumman (NOC), UnitedHealth (UNH), D.R. Horton (DHI), Capital One (COF), 3M (MMM). One of Q1 season’s heaviest single-day calendars, spanning Health Care, Industrials, Financials, and Consumer Discretionary.

THE TAKEAWAY

Tuesday tilts cautiously positive — futures are higher, UNH beat, and there’s a thread of hope around Iran talks — but tonight’s ceasefire deadline keeps risk elevated and the VIX near 19. Two things to watch: Brent crude’s reaction to Islamabad headlines (a sustained move above $100 would likely flip the session’s tone) and whether today’s heavy earnings slate from defense and Health Care names can sustain the tape through geopolitical uncertainty.
